Jo is mum to a young man with an Asperger’s Diagnosis, she was inspired by him to retrain & learn more about Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and has a strong commitment to be part of making real and meaningful change for those with SEND and their families. In 2009 Jo started a support group to help other parents going through the diagnostic process and through online qualifications and volunteering, built up her knowledge, Jo worked in Independent Support from 2015 to 2016 and supported local families going through the Education Health & Care plan (EHCP) process. North Tyneside needed a new Parent Carer forum in 2017 and Jo became Co-Chair from 2017 to 2020 and has led the local forum as Chair since 2020 to date. Jo also moved into regional work across the North East and Cumbria in 2018 and in 2019 became a Director and Steering group member for the National Network of Parent Carer Forums (NNPCF). In 2020 the forum registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) with Jo & Helen as the Directors and using successful bid funding established the Family support service in North Tyneside. Jo also works as a Strategic Workforce Development Manager – Family carers, working across the North Cumbria and North East Integrated Care System (ICS).

I am parent carer to a young lady with Prader-Willi Syndrome and a transgender young person with Autism and ADHD, my work background started with delivering Early Support Workshops to families who had young children with disabilities. I then moved on to volunteering as an Independent Supporter in North Tyneside to help families with parents views for their Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) I then moved on to work with Contact- for families with disabled children for 3 years delivering Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) workshops, then when my contract came to an end, I worked for Special Education Needs Information Advice and Support in Newcastle (SENDIASS) I spent two years in the privileged position providing family support to parent carers in North Tyneside, after Jo and I placed successful bids for funding.

Sarah comes from a legal background and headed a team in a national law firm specialising in injuries following accidents, including neurotrauma injuries.
Sarah is a Parent Carer of 3 children, one of whom has Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Due to the needs of Sarah’s children she decided to have a change of career and joined NTCPF in 2021 as a Peer Engagement Officer. Sarah is currently upskilling in order to take on more of the strategic and management work within the forum and has recently stepped up as Vice Chair.
